Unpacking the weekend: part 1

Playing for something bigger than yourself—this weekend, it was about breast cancer awareness, the James hospital and the Stephanie Spielman foundation. The stories shared throughout the weekend were powerful. Survivors and their families spoke from the heart, reminding us how cancer touches too many lives. It was emotional, inspirational, and deeply moving. I thank Sherri Courter and Jilly B for sharing their personal stories and who they were playing for this weekend.

Beyond creating awareness about the importance of breast cancer screenings and advocacy, the APP also took steps to inspire future generations. Victoria’s Secret hosted a panel for high school and middle school girls, and I had the honor of being asked to share my journey. As a female athlete balancing dreams, motherhood, and being a wife, I spoke alongside a remarkable group of women:

Natalie McLean, Senior Designer at Victoria’s Secret & Co.

Dr. Electra Paskett, a professor and leading cancer researcher.

Dr. Lisa Hinkelman, Founder and CEO of Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX).

AJ McCord, our brilliant moderator, making waves in the sports commentary world.

It was a proud moment to share with Lily, watching from the crowd, as we connected with and empowered so many others. This weekend was a reminder that we are all playing for something bigger—fighting for hope, health, and the strength to keep pushing forward.

Here’s a bit more information on the cause we supported this weekend:

The Stephanie Spielman Foundation for Breast Cancer Research was founded in honor of Stephanie Spielman, who became an inspirational figure in the fight against breast cancer. Her story began in 1998 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30. Stephanie was the wife of Chris Spielman, a former NFL linebacker and Ohio State football star. Together, they became powerful advocates for breast cancer awareness and research.

The Story Behind the Foundation:

Diagnosis and Advocacy: After her diagnosis, Stephanie and Chris decided to go public with her condition, using their platform to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and breast cancer research. They were open about the emotional and physical challenges they faced, encouraging others to take action for their health.

The Birth of the Foundation: Stephanie’s battle with breast cancer inspired the Spielman family and the community to rally around her cause. While undergoing treatment, she became actively involved in fundraising efforts. In 1999, Stephanie and Chris launched the Stephanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (known as The James). The fund focused on raising money for cancer research, which became a personal mission for the Spielman family.

Impact and Legacy: Over time, the foundation grew significantly, raising millions of dollars for breast cancer research. Stephanie’s message of strength, hope, and perseverance resonated with many, and her efforts brought substantial attention to the fight against breast cancer. Tragically, Stephanie passed away in 2009 after battling cancer for more than a decade. However, her legacy continues through the foundation and the lives it touches.

Ongoing Work: The Stephanie Spielman Foundation supports the development of new treatments and research efforts aimed at finding a cure for breast cancer. The foundation also provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients in need, helping with treatment costs and offering support through their difficult journeys.

Stephanie’s story is one of courage, resilience, and the desire to help others, even while facing her own health battles. Today, her foundation remains a powerful force in the fight against breast cancer, and her impact continues to inspire others to contribute to the cause. It was honor to hear her daughter speak before our match on Sunday on behalf of their foundation. 🩷
