Everybody, Always: Reflections from the Sidelines
Today, I feel a bit like Bob Goff, the author of one of my favorite books, Everybody, Always. As I sit at Universal Studios, writing and reflecting, it’s a moment to decompress after a weekend full of highs and lows. While Ryler and the kids are off conquering rides, I’m on the sidelines, cheering them on. Motion sickness has been my unwelcome companion as I’ve gotten older, but seeing their joy as they step off the rides makes it all worthwhile.

The Weekend Recap
This weekend was tough. We didn’t win. We beat Atlanta in the semis 2-0 and lost in the final 2-1. I’m drained, disappointed, and processing the result. It’s easy to come up with excuses, but the truth is, we gave it our all with half of our usual team and two incredible substitutes (Wyatt and Michelle) who stepped up in a big way. Despite our effort, Miami’s team proved stronger, and they deserved their victory. Congratulations to them!
MLP (Major League Pickleball) continues to deliver a product that’s exciting and fan-friendly. The premier league final last night was a nail-biter, filled with energy and drama. But honestly, I wish MLP gave all teams and matches that same level of attention and enthusiasm. Sometimes it feels like the Challenger League is treated as the “ugly stepchild,” and that disparity takes away from the experience for both players and fans.

Behind the Scenes: A Mixed Bag
One thing that stood out this season was the stark difference in how teams were supported. Some teams enjoyed top-notch accommodations—$500-per-night hotels, fully paid flights, and meals—while others had to cover everything themselves. It’s baffling how players in the same league can have such wildly different experiences. To me, this points to the growing pains of a league still figuring out its standards and structure.
Fans often don’t see the behind-the-scenes realities that impact players’ decisions to compete in MLP. It’s not always a simple choice. For me, I enjoyed my team and our ownership, but the future is still uncertain. There are so many factors to consider, and I’ll need time to weigh them before deciding if I’ll return next season.

What’s Next
For now, I’m taking a much-needed breather. Today is about being present with my kids, without pickleball, without the stress. Watching their happiness and hearing their laughter is the best reminder of what matters most.
If this weekend taught me anything, it’s that life, like sports, is a journey filled with victories and defeats. And no matter the outcome, we get to choose how we show up—everybody, always.
